This small south west Calgary backyard was in much need of some tlc. The old brick paving stone steps were falling apart since it wasn't the right stone for the job and the gravel base depth was inadequate. There was also almost no gravel base used underneath the stepping stones which made them uneven and drain water towards the garage. The landscape fabric that was used was not a thick contractor grade variety. There were many tears and holes in the landscape fabric leading to the invasion of weeds. A Saskatoon berry shrub was planted and not very well maintained, it was left to outgrow the space and take up a lot of yard space. Overall there was a lot of wasted space in this backyard. We wanted to open up the space by making the raised wood deck smaller into just a bbq area off of the back door and create one large paving stone patio on the upper tier. This allowed for a natural gas fire table to be installed and to have plenty of patio furniture to entertain guests. It also provided more privacy since the new paving stone patio was at ground level. New dimensional stone steps were used as the new staircase leading to the garage door. These steps are big and heavy, perfect for those high traffic areas. We also installed a small area of artificial turf for the dog to relax on a nice day and do its business. The paving stone path continued to the back gate for easy access to the garbage and we used large river rock to create a natural drain swale and funnel any run off from the patio to the back alley.
When it comes to landscaping, picking the correct material is critical to its success. Clients frequently approach us with fresh ideas for material proposals, or aged materials that are no longer reliable for their properties. When this happens, we consult with them to ensure that what they're aiming to accomplish is the best solution long-term. We can select the optimum material to meet their expectation by knowing our clients needs. All of the hardscape materials we install for our stone steps, retaining walls and paving stone paths/patios are from Belgard , Barkman Concrete or Techo-Bloc.
The fundamentals to every landscape are walkways and patios. Patios act as the centre of your outdoor social area where you will entertain and relax. They will inspire other outdoor enhancements including pergolas, fire pits, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, landscape lighting, plantings and other outdoor amenities.
